QUITO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador recorded 1,689 new COVID-19 infections and 48 more deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the tally to 362,843 cases and 12,795 deaths, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

According to the daily report, the province of Pichincha recorded 519 more cases, with 472 in the capital Quito, the most populated city and epicenter of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, out of its 24 provinces, the government has identified 11 with the highest incidence rates of infection in the country.

Ecuador is facing a rebound of COVID-19 cases, which has led to the near collapse of its hospital system, in addition to increasing the demand for oxygen.

In addition, health authorities confirmed this week that three coronavirus variants are circulating in Ecuador, including the variant first detected in Brazil.

As of the beginning of this week, 577,711 COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered in the country, including 401,871 first doses and 175,840 second doses, according to the latest Health Ministry report. Enditem
