ULAN BATOR, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia reported 1,264 new locally transmitted COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the national caseload to 27,956, the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) said Friday.

Most of the latest confirmed cases were detected in the country's capital Ulan Bator, which is the hardest hit by COVID-19, the NCCD said in a statement.

Meanwhile, eight more patients died from the disease, the center said.

The last 24 hours saw 486 more patients released after recovery, the national count being brought to 14,258, it said.

A nationwide lockdown, aiming at curbing the steep surge in local COVID-19 cases, took effect on April 10 and will last till Sunday.

However, the Asian country has been witnessing a COVID-19 surge amid the lockdown, reporting around 1,000 COVID-19 infections daily in recent days, mostly in Ulan Bator, home to over half of the country's population.

The country's health ministry has proposed extending the current lockdown by at least a week, and the government is expected to discuss the proposal on Friday. Enditem
