RIO DE JANEIRO, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazil international striker Fred struck a second-half equalizer as Fluminense earned a 1-1 draw with River Plate in their opening Copa Libertadores group match on Thursday.
Gonzalo Montiel gave the Argentine side an early lead by converting a penalty after Rafael Borre was brought down by Marcos Felipe.
Fred put the Brazilian Serie A club on level terms with a cool finish after being set up by Juan Cazares on the counterattack.
The hosts controlled only 33% of possession but looked more likely to score a winner as they had 14 shots on goal to River Plate's three.
Meanwhile, Jefferson Duque scored one goal and set up another as Colombia's Atletico Nacional secured a 2-0 home win over Universidad Catolica of Chile.
Duque provided the assist for Andres Andrade's opening goal before combining with Baldomero Perlaza to double Nacional's lead on the stroke of halftime.
The 2016 Copa Libertadores champions defended solidly thereafter to ensure a trouble-free start to their campaign. Enditem
