Cambodia's daily COVID-19 cases reach new high of 655

PHNOM PENH, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Friday recorded an all-time high of daily COVID-19 cases at 655 in the last 24 hours, raising its total tally to 8,848, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

The figure surpasses the previous daily record of 624 cases reported on April 18.

The new infections included one imported case and 654 local cases including 522 detected in the national capital Phnom Penh, 113 in Preah Sihanouk province, five each in Kandal and Takeo provinces, three each in Kampong Cham and Kep provinces and one each in Kampong Speu, Tboung Khmum and Mondulkiri provinces, the statement said.

The Southeast Asian nation also reported two new deaths, bringing the official death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic to 61, the statement said, adding that 224 patients have recovered, taking the overall number of recoveries to 3,148.

Cambodia has been suffering the third wave of community outbreak of COVID-19 since Feb. 20.

In a bid to curb the virus' spread, the country has imposed a two-week stay-at-home lockdown in Phnom Penh, Kandal province's Ta Khmau city and Preah Sihanouk province's Preah Sihanouk city.

It has also banned inter-provincial travels and closed all schools, tourist attractions, sports facilities, museums, cinemas, and entertainment venues nationwide. Enditem
