GAZA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Israeli fighter jets struck early on Saturday military posts and facilities that belong to militant groups in the Gaza Strip in response to rockets fire, Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said.

The eyewitnesses said the Israeli fighter jets hovered over the besieged enclave, adding that huge explosions were heard following the airstrikes. No injuries were reported, but damage was caused in the targeted facilities.

According to the security sources, several militant groups, including Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) armed wing al-Qassam Brigades, launched more than 35 rockets and projectiles at southern Israel overnight and on Saturday.

Shortly before launching the rockets, the Gaza-based chamber of joint military operations, which comprises 12 armed wings, including Hamas, said in a leaflet that it warns Israel of keeping its assaults against East Jerusalem and its residents.

Right after the rockets were fired at southern Israel, Israeli army artillery fired back at lookout posts that belong to Hamas militants near the borderline area between the eastern Gaza Strip and Israel, the security sources said.

An Israeli army spokesman said in a press statement that Israeli fighter jets and other aircraft struck a number of sites linked to Hamas, the movement that rules the Gaza Strip.

Neither Hamas nor any military groups had officially claimed responsibility for firing the rockets and projectiles at Israel. According to Israeli media outlets, the rockets struck fields northeast of the Gaza Strip, causing neither injury nor damage.

While rockets were fired at Israel, thousands of demonstrators defied the lockdown which was imposed on the Gaza Strip to combat the spread of coronavirus, took to the streets, and rallied in support of Jerusalem. Enditem
