SUVA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Fiji reported on Monday 12 locally transmitted cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of active cases to 36 in the island nation.

According to Fiji's Health Ministry, Fiji now has 22 locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 and 14 imported cases.

The first new case is a 30-year-old soldier working in a border quarantine facility in Fiji's third largest city of Nadi, and he is the roommate of case 73, the first border quarantine soldier announced to have been infected by the virus on April 18 this year.

Four of the new cases are close contacts of the 53-year-old female hotel worker in Nadi, who is the central link of local transmissions in the island nation.

The other seven new cases are all close household contacts of the 29-year-old woman from capital city of Suva who was announced a positive result for COVID-19 on Sunday. Her husband is the 30-year-old soldier who has tested positive.

The Permanent Secretary for Fiji's Health Ministry James Fong said on Monday that finding a case of community transmission is of great concern because it indicates that an outbreak is widespread and uncontrolled, with a devastating outbreak imminent.

Altogether Fiji has 103 COVID-19 cases, with 65 recoveries and two deaths, since its first case was reported on March 19 last year.

To contain the spread of COVID-19, Fiji announced on Sunday the 14-day containment zones in the Lami-Suva-Nausori area. Beginning at 4:00 a.m. local time on Monday and for the next 14 days, Fijians will not be allowed in or out of the containment zones in the area.

Fiji has maintained a nationwide curfew from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. local time since March last year. Enditem
