PHNOM PENH, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's COVID-19 case total jumped to 10,555 on Monday after 580 new infections were confirmed across the country in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

Five more fatalities have been reported, bringing the death toll to 79, the statement said, adding that 177 patients have recovered, taking the overall number of recoveries to 3,577.

The statement said the new infections included 579 local cases-337 in capital Phnom Penh, 91 each in Preah Sihanouk and Banteay Meanchey provinces, 51 in Kandal province, two each in Prey Veng and Kampong Thom provinces, and one each in Svay Rieng, Tboung Khmum, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Speu and Kep provinces-and one imported case.

The Southeast Asian nation has been suffering from the third wave of community outbreak of COVID-19 since Feb. 20.

In an effort to flatten the infection curve, the kingdom has ordered a two-week stay-at-home lockdown in Phnom Penh and adjacent Ta Khmau city from April 15 to 28 and in the coastal city of Preah Sihanouk from April 23 to May 6.

MoH's secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine on Monday renewed her calls on people to adapt to the new normal, including wearing face masks, washing hands with alcohol or soap frequently and keeping a physical distancing of 1.5 meters from each other.

"The virus is still circulating and does not go away yet. Do not forget to keep your health good and safe from COVID-19," she said. "Hope to overcome this difficult time together. We all can stop the spread of the virus if we can act faster and together."

The kingdom launched an anti-COVID-19 vaccination drive on Feb. 10 after having received vaccines from China and the World Health Organization-led COVAX Facility.

So far, some 1.3 million out of the country's 16 million population had been inoculated against the virus, according to a government report. Enditem
