Live COVID-19 updates: Philippines receives additional batch of China's Sinovac vaccines

BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MANILA -- The Philippines received an additional batch of the Sinovac CoronaVac vaccine from China on Thursday morning, allowing the Southeast Asian country to continue its vaccination drive.

Carlito Galvez, chief implementer of the country's fight against COVID-19, said the government expects the rest of the vaccines it purchased from Sinovac could be delivered within this year.

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia -- Beijing Jiaotong University of China and the University of Malaysia Pahang signed an agreement on Wednesday on the offering of dual degree programs related to railway to jointly cultivate Malaysian talents in the field.

According to the Memorandum of Agreement signed between the two universities, three railway related programs of dual bachelor's degrees will be offered initially, including civil engineering, mechanical/vehicle engineering as well as electrical engineering. The tuition fee would be covered by Malaysia's Public Service Department.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland on Wednesday reported 20 new COVID-19 cases, all of which were imported, the National Health Commission said in its daily report on Thursday.

Of all the cases, 11 were reported in Zhejiang, five in Shanghai, and one each in Shanxi, Hubei, Guangdong and Sichuan.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina's Ministry of Health on Wednesday reported 23,718 new COVID-19 infections and 348 more deaths in the last day, with a total of 2,928,890 cases and 62,947 deaths.

The country's Minister of Security Sabina Frederic and Secretary of Justice and Security of Buenos Aires Marcelo D'Alessandro agreed on "greater control of terminal station entrances and different transfer centers" in the capital city in response to the new wave of infections.

OTTAWA -- Canada reported 5,071 new COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday afternoon, bringing the total number to 1,200,057, including 24,106 deaths and 101,586 variants, according to CTV.

Canada's national-level data showed a seven-day average of 7,992 new cases daily on April 21-27, a 7.5 percent decrease compared to the previous seven days, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada on Wednesday. Enditem
