Roundup: India's COVID-19 tally surpasses 18 mln, Philippines reports 8,276 new cases

HONG KONG, April 29 (Xinhua) -- More COVID-19 cases and deaths were reported in Asia-Pacific on Thursday, as India recorded the highest daily spike of 379,257 new cases, taking the total to 18,376,524.

Besides, 3,645 deaths were reported across the country since Wednesday morning, also the highest daily spike, bringing the death toll to 204,832, showed the data of the federal health ministry.

There are still a total of 3,084,814 active cases in the country, with an increase of 106,105 in the past 24 hours, as 15,086,878 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals so far.

The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 8,276 new confirmed cases, bringing the country's total tally to 1,028,738.

The death toll rose to 17,145 after 114 more patients were reported to have died from the coronavirus epidemic, the DOH said.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a televised press conference on Thursday that the infections "peaked" in the first week of April, and that nearly 50 percent of the confirmed cases were reported in Metro Manila.

In Indonesia, the confirmed cases rose by 5,833 within one day to 1,662,868, with the death toll adding by 218 to 45,334, the health ministry said.

According to the ministry, 6,015 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,517,432.

Malaysia reported 3,332 new infections, bringing the national total to 404,925, the health ministry said.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that nine of the new cases are imported and 3,323 are local transmissions.

Another 15 deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 1,492.

Some 1,943 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 375,340, or 92.7 percent, of all cases.

Thailand registered 1,871 new cases and 10 fatalities, according to the country's Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of the new infections, 1,864 were domestic transmissions and seven others imported cases, CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said.

Thailand has so far confirmed a total of 63,570 cases, of which 35,394 patients have fully recovered and been released from hospitals while 27,988 others are currently hospitalized and 188 fatalities have been reported so far.

As of Wednesday, a total of 1,344,646 doses of vaccines have been administered in the country, as the government has accelerated its vaccination campaign. Enditem
