MACAO, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) is gearing up for welcoming more tourists from the mainland during the upcoming May Day holiday on May 1-5, related government departments said here Thursday.

Macao's border ports with the mainland and the police force have made thorough preparations for the holiday, during which the daily number of visitor arrivals to Macao is expected to be 20 percent higher than the daily highest record since the COVID-19 outbreak, said Ng Kam Wa, commissioner of Macao's Public Security Police Force.

The number of mainland tourists visiting Macao has increased obviously recently as epidemic situations on both sides continued to stabilize, Ng said, adding that Macao recorded 36,500 visitor arrivals on April 18, the highest daily number since the epidemic struck.

Police have also stepped up personnel deployment to handle customs clearance and patrol in tourist spots during the holiday, according to the police force.

Macao has been actively promoting itself as a safe and quality destination for mainland tourists, organizing promotional events in different mainland cities and offering discounts for payments made on electronic platforms.

The SAR has also offered coupons of up to 50 percent discounts for mainland tourists booking hotels in Macao.

As of Thursday, no locally transmitted COVID-19 case had been reported in Macao for 396 days. No death had ever been caused by the virus in the SAR. Enditem
