SEOUL, May 3 (Xinhua) -- South Korean automakers' global car sale posted a double-digit growth in April, reflecting a recovery from the economic downturn, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, industry data showed Monday.

The number of vehicles, sold globally by five local automakers including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Ssangyong, was 630,691 in April, up 76.9 percent from a year earlier.

The domestic automotive sale declined 6.6 percent over the year to 135,601 units last month, but the sale in markets outside of South Korea more than doubled to 495,090 units.

Hyundai Motor, the country's biggest carmaker, globally sold a total of 345,777 vehicles in April. The company's sale in the domestic market slipped 1.2 percent, but its overseas sale almost tripled compared to a year ago.

The global car sale for Kia Motors, affiliated with Hyundai, was 249,734 vehicles in April, up 78 percent from a year earlier. Kia's local car sale grew 1.5 percent and its overseas sale more than doubled last month.

Global vehicle sales by GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Ssangyong Motor all contracted in double figures in April.

Meanwhile, the global automotive sale by the five carmakers reduced 6.8 percent in April from a month earlier owing to the supply shortage of semiconductors used for vehicles. Enditem
