BEIRUT, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon and Israel resumed on Tuesday indirect negotiations to demarcate maritime borders in a fifth round sponsored by the United Nations with direct mediation by the United States, the National News Agency reported.

The negotiations took place in a meeting held at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in Naqoura in southern Lebanon.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun met a day earlier with the Lebanese delegation engaged in indirect negotiations with Israel and he emphasized the importance of demarcating his country's maritime borders in accordance with international laws and regulations.

Lebanon and Israel had embarked on negotiations over maritime borders demarcation in a disputed area of about 860 square km of the Mediterranean Sea. The Lebanese government recently signed a document that will formally lay claim to an additional 1,430 square km. Enditem
