HANOI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam spent over 4.2 billion U.S. dollars importing cloth in the first four months of this year, posting a year-on-year rise of 18.2 percent, according to the country's General Statistics Office on Wednesday.

Between January and April, Vietnam imported over 571,000 tons of cotton worth 984 million U.S. dollars, up 6.5 percent in volume and 11.7 percent in value.

Over the period, the country also poured 880 million U.S. dollars into importing 414,000 tons of yarn, up 23.9 percent and 19.8 percent respectively.

Last year, Vietnam spent 11.8 billion U.S. dollars importing cloth and earned roughly 29.5 billion U.S. dollars from exporting garments and textiles, according to the office. China was Vietnam's largest supplier of cloth, followed by South Korea and Japan. Enditem
