SUVA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- The Fijian military has completed preliminary investigations against the soldiers alleged to have breached COVID-19 protocols.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) on Wednesday, Fiji's Defence Minister Inia Seruiratu said that a board of inquiry has been set up to look into the actions of the soldiers.

He also confirmed that all necessary procedures will be followed, however, only when the Fijian military is able to do so in a COVID-19 safe environment.

In the meantime, the minister said that relevant changes have been implemented by the Fijian military to ensure there are no future breaches from the COVID-19 quarantine areas in Nadi.

He said that the breaches by a few soldiers tarnished the image of hardworking Fijian soldiers who had kept the virus from other Fijians in the communities.

It was earlier confirmed that two soldiers stationed at quarantine facilities came into close contact at the Tanoa Hotel in Nadi, which is against COVID-19 protocols and caused the spread of the virus in the community.

One of the soldiers is believed to have been exposed to the virus while handling the luggage of two arrivals from India. He is then believed to have infected the second soldier.

Another four soldiers who returned from overseas are alleged to have fraternized amongst themselves which is also in breach of protocols.

Currently, Fiji has recorded 125 COVID-19 cases, with 39 active, 84 recoveries and two deaths. Enditem
