LUSAKA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Zambia expects to begin its first-ever electronic population census in November this year, a senior government official said Wednesday.

The exercise, which was supposed to have been held last year, will start from Nov. 1 to Nov. 28.

Minister of National Development and Planning Chiteme Alexander said the government has so far made tremendous strides toward undertaking the exercise.

While commending the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for its role in providing human, technical and financial support toward the exercise whose preparations have been running since 2016, the official said the 2,110 bicycles received from the UNFPA will be used for data collection especially in rural areas where there was a challenge of accessibility to poor road networks.

UNFPA Country Representative Gift Malunga commended the Zambian government for undertaking the census exercise amid the COVID-19 pandemic, saying this was a proof that the government was committed to ensuring the availability of statistics.

Zambia conducts a Census of Population and Housing every one decade. The last census was conducted in 2010.
