JOHANNESBURG, May 5 (Xinhua) -- The South African police have arrested three persons for defrauding over 5 million rand (over 350,000 U.S. dollars) worth of foodstuffs belonging to World Food Program (WFP) for its humanitarian relief in Malawi, said the police on Wednesday.
The police said the South African Revenue Services (SARS) reported a criminal case of fraud after realizing that something was amiss with the value added taxi involving the three in 2017.
"The supplies that included tons of refined vegetable oil and yellow split peas were meant for a relief operation in Malawi. The suspects' company was tasked to transport the piles but this never took place. It has since emerged that the goods never left the Republic of South Africa (RSA) but were instead sold for self-gain from within the country at the detriment of the needy," said police spokesperson Lloyd Ramovha.
He stated that the three suspects, aged 51, 44 and 62, will appear in the Palm Ridge Commercial Crime Court on June 8 to face a raft of charges. Enditem
