LAGOS, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian troops have rescued 13 kidnapped people in the northwestern state of Kaduna after a fierce gun battle, an official said Wednesday.

Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for the state's internal security and home affairs, said a report from the military to the state government confirmed the rescue of 13 kidnapped persons from the gunmen in the Chikun local government area of the state.

The 13 victims from Dutse went to work at a farm located around Bakin Kasuwa in the Chikun local government area, and "were attacked by the bandits in the process," he said.

According to him, troops on receiving credible intelligence of the abduction trailed the bandits to a forest in the area and engaged them in a gun duel. They rescued all the victims after defeating the kidnappers.

The commissioner said the gunmen also killed two people, burnt a church and looted some houses in the area.

The northern region of the most populous African country has witnessed unabated gunmen attacks, which have left hundreds dead in recent years. Enditem
