COLOMBO, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) on Thursday announced a temporary ban taking immediate effect on the arrival of Indian air passengers.

CAASL Additional Director General P. A. Jayakantha said this decision was made in order to prevent the COVID-19 virus variant found in India from entering Sri Lanka.

He said a notice was issued to all airlines to prevent the disembarkment of Indian nationals from India until further notice.

Sri Lanka is suffering a sudden spike in COVID-19 infections. The health authorities said a new COVID-19 virus variant was rapidly spreading across the country.

Hospitals and their intensive care units were filled to the maximum with the rising number of patients, and Army Commander and head of the National Operations Center for the Prevention of COVID-19 Shavendra Silva said on Wednesday that the army will assist in setting up more treatment centers in the affected areas, providing an additional 10,000 hospital beds.

According to doctors, more young people in Sri Lanka have been hospitalized with the new virus variant, demanding oxygen and critical care in treatment. Enditem
