Australian police to assist Maldives in investigation into attack on parliament speaker

MALE, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives will receive assistance from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in its investigations into an explosion targeting Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, Maldives President Ibrahim Solih said here Friday.

In a special televised address held Friday morning, Solih said the AFP will arrive in Maldives on Saturday. He said there would be a "swift and thorough" investigation and that the attackers would "face the full force of the law."

President Solih said the attack on Nasheed which occurred on Thursday evening outside his residence, was an attack on the Maldives's democracy and economy. He said that all measures were being taken to protect the safety and security of the people.

Nasheed and three others were injured as an explosion was triggered while the parliament speaker was entering his car near his residence. Nasheed has been admitted to the ADK Hospital for treatment. Enditem
