SEOUL, May 7 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's military said Friday that it will push to raise the daily meal cost for soldiers following public criticism over a poor meal quality for service members.
Defense Minister Suh Wook held a meeting with major military commanders, deciding to "actively push for" a hike in the daily average meal cost for troops from 8,790 won (7.8 U.S. dollars) this year to 10,500 won (9.4 U.S. dollars) next year, according to the defense ministry.
This year's per-meal cost for soldiers stands merely at 2,930 won (2.6 U.S. dollars), lower than the meal cost of 3,625 won (3.2 U.S. dollars) for high school students.
The push for an improved meal quality came as the military recently came under criticism for the poor meal quality, of which photos were posted online, and what some service members believed to be excessive quarantine measures.
The military also decided to grant the leave to more soldiers beginning Monday as the furlough has been restricted because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
