DHAKA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) soldiers have been deployed in major Bangladesh ferry terminals to curb the exodus of home-goers amid the COVID-19 pandemic ahead of Muslim Eid festival slated to be celebrated on or around May 14.

BGB Spokesperson Shariful Islam told journalists that the paramilitary soldiers were deployed at Mawa and Shimulia ferry terminals in Munshiganj district on the outskirts of Dhaka and Paturia ferry terminal in Manikganj district, some 63 km northwest of capital city, on Sunday to control the rush of holidaymakers.

Rush of Eid-home-goers has been prevailing in Bangladeshi cities and towns ahead of the Muslim Eid al-Fitr festival, despite the fact that the government asked all to stay at their present locations to limit the spread of the COVID-19.

In the backdrop of a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh in recent months, the Bangladeshi government is emphasizing wearing masks and social distancing in public to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Bangladesh recorded 1,386 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 56 new deaths on Sunday, making its total tally at 773,513 with 11,934 deaths, the Directorate General of Health Services said. Enditem
