GAZA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Israeli tanks struck military posts belonging to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) early Monday morning in response to rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel, Palestinian sources and Israeli army said.

The Palestinian sources said Israeli tanks stationed at the borders between eastern Gaza Strip and Israel fired several shells at Hamas lookout posts in northern and southern Gaza Strip.

Several explosions were heard in the two areas, the sources said, adding that no injuries were reported, but damage was caused to the posts that belong to Hamas military wing al-Qassam Brigades.

Meanwhile, an Israeli army spokesman said in a press statement that Israeli artillery struck several Hamas military posts in the Gaza Strip in response to rockets and incendiary balloons launched into southern Israel.

Israeli media reported that Gaza militants early in the morning fired two rockets at Israel. One was intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system and the other landed at an empty area, causing no injuries or damage.

On Sunday, masked young men in Gaza launched dozens of incendiary balloons from the coastal enclave into Israel, causing more than 40 fires in agricultural fields, according to the Israeli media.

In response to rockets and incendiary balloons fired from Gaza, Israeli authorities banned more than 3,000 Palestinian fishermen from fishing off the Gaza Strip coast until further notice.

Tensions between Israel and Palestinians have been flaring over the past few days due to escalated clashes in East Jerusalem between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli police forces. Enditem
