TEHRAN, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Monday confirmed for the first time that it is in talks with Saudi Arabia to defuse tensions, official IRNA news agency reported.

"The removal of tensions between the two countries in the Gulf region is in the interest of both nations and the region," Iranian Foreign Ministry Saeed Khatibzadeh spokesman said at his weekly press briefing.

The dialogues were earlier confirmed last Friday by a Saudi foreign ministry official after press reports about talks between the two sides in Iraq were initially dismissed in April.

The Iranian spokesperson stressed that Tehran has consistently been open to dialogue with Riyadh, and voiced his hope that "a meaningful common understanding of bilateral and regional matters" will be reached.

Last month, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed Saudi desire to develop good ties with Iran during an interview with Al Arabiya TV. Enditem
