KATHMANDU, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli lost the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on Monday.

Oli got just 93 votes against the 136 votes needed to win the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives which has 271 members at present.

"As many as 93 lawmakers voted for the vote of confidence while 124 lawmakers voted against it. Therefore, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli lost the vote of confidence," announced Agni Prasad Sapkota, speaker of the House of Representatives, after the voting.

"Similarly, 15 lawmakers gave a neutral vote," the speaker said.

The ruling CPN-UML has 121 seats. However, the Madhav Nepal-led faction of CPN-UML with 32 lawmakers abstained from the voting process.

The faction, which had threatened to resign en masse amid an escalating feud within the party, on Monday morning decided to abstain from the voting process rather than give a mass resignation.

"We decided to boycott the voting process rather than resigning," Birodh Khatiwada, a lawmaker from the Madhav Nepal-led faction, told Xinhua.

"We want to protest the unilateral move of Oli by staying in the party."

As per the Article 100 (3) of the Constitution of Nepal, the prime minister is relieved from her/his office if she/he fails to get the vote of confidence from the parliament.

The government was pushed into minority after the CPN (Maoist Centre) on May 5 withdrew its support for Oli extended in February 2018.

Oli, however, decided to take the vote of confidence on May 2 even before the CPN (Maoist Centre) withdrew its support.

Addressing the House of Representatives before the vote of confidence motion was tabled for the voting, Oli said his government had always worked for nationalism, development and taking the country towards the path of prosperity.

"I decided to take a vote of confidence because I believe the parliament has rightly assessed the works by the government," Oli said in the parliament.

"There is no reason why the government shouldn't get a trust vote." Enditem
