Live COVID-19 updates: Britain records 2,474 new cases, 20 new deaths

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

LONDON -- Another 2,474 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 4,439,691, according to official figures released Tuesday.

The country also reported another 20 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 127,629. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.

DOHA -- The Qatari health ministry on Tuesday announced 343 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 211,732, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

Meanwhile, 994 more people recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 203,546, while the fatalities increased by four to 516, according to a ministry statement quoted by QNA.

A total of 1,954,173 persons in Qatar have taken lab tests for COVID-19 so far, while the total number of vaccine doses administered is 1,876,178.

RABAT -- Morocco's COVID-19 tally rose to 514,164 on Tuesday as 242 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Health, the death toll rose to 9,083 with six new fatalities during the last 24 hours, while 225 people are in intensive care units.

The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 in Morocco increased to 501,404 after 258 new ones were added, the statement said.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon registered on Tuesday 544 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of infections to 533,685, the Health Ministry reported.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths from the virus increased by 20 to 7,527.

Firas Abiad, director of Rafic Hariri University Hospital (RHUH), urged on Tuesday the Lebanese authorities to impose tough border restrictions while calling for more public adherence to safety measures as the COVID-19 variant first detected in India has already been identified in nearby countries.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 25 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the total tally to 61,403.

Of the new cases, 12 are imported cases and 13 are community cases.

On Tuesday, 22 more COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities, bringing the total number of recoveries from the coronavirus epidemic to 60,975, the ministry said. Enditem
