BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

LONDON -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Thursday that Britain is "anxious" about the coronavirus variant first detected in India and his government is "ruling nothing out" to tackle its spread in the country.

"We want to make sure that we take all the prudential, all the cautious steps now that we could take," he told Sky News.

"So there are meetings going on today (Thursday) to consider exactly what we need to do," he said.

VIENTIANE -- The death of an elderly woman in Lao capital Vientiane after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine was unlikely related to any complications caused by the vaccine, according to the Lao Ministry of Health.

A 63-year-old woman passed all the checks including a temperature test before she was vaccinated and did not feel unwell immediately afterwards, Bandith Xomphonphakdy, a vaccine expert, told a press conference in Lao capital Vientiane on Tuesday.

TEHRAN -- Iran on Thursday reported 14,246 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 2,722,007.

The pandemic has so far claimed 76,231 lives in Iran, up by 297 in the past 24 hours, Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman of the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said during her daily briefing on the state of pandemic in the country.

BANGKOK -- Thailand has reported the highest daily count of new COVID-19 cases Thursday following new prison clusters, complicating the country's fight against its worst coronavirus outbreak so far.

A total of 4,887 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours, an "unusually high" number, Ministry of Foreign Affairs official Pensom Lertsithichai said at the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration daily briefing. Enditem
