PHNOM PENH, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Friday that 2 million people in the Southeast Asian nation have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 so far.
Tith Chenda, a 23-year-old garment factory worker, was the 2,000,000th person to be vaccinated, he wrote on his official Facebook page, adding that he awarded her 10 million riels (2,500 U.S. dollars) for being the 2,000,000th vaccine recipient.
COVID-19 vaccine serves as a booster that strengthens immune response. The prime minister said the vaccine, along with other health safety measures, would protect lives from the COVID-19 attack.
"Today, 2 million people, or 20 percent of our 10-million-target population, have already been vaccinated," Hun Sen said.
Cambodia launched an anti-COVID-19 inoculation drive on Feb. 10 and the country has so far received more than 4.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines from China and the World Health Organization's COVAX Facility.
The country has so far logged a total of 21,499 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 147 deaths and 9,867 recoveries, the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Friday. Enditem
