SUVA, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Fiji will start the curfew in the greater Suva area later Friday night as the Pacific island nation reported one new COVID-19 case.

According to Fiji's Health Ministry, the new case is a household member of the cases confirmed in Nausori, a town about 19 km northeast of the capital city of Suva on Thursday, and he has been isolated at Navua Hospital.

Fiji has registered 166 cases in total, with 114 recoveries, 48 active cases and four deaths since the island nation reported its first confirmed case in March last year.

The health ministry has warned that COVID-19 is still circulating in several places including Nadi and Lautoka.

The 24-hour lockdown for the containment zones in Suva and Nausori will start at 11:00 p.m. on Friday until 4:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday because of the rapidly rising number of contacts stemming from new COVID-19 cases in the area.

If the lockdown of Suva and Nausori expires on schedule, the curfew hours from 6:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. will apply in these areas as well.

From Saturday, the curfew hours for all of Fiji's main island of Viti Levu will expand from 6:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. every day. For the rest of Fiji, the curfew hours will remain from 11:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. local time.

In a related development, Fiji Airways also announced on Friday that all of its international passenger repatriation flights into and out of Fiji have been canceled until May 29. Enditem
