JERUSALEM, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip at the Tel Aviv area and Israel's international Ben Gurion Airport on Saturday, according to Israeli media and eyewitnesses.

Israel's state-owned Kan TV news reported that rockets fell in two separated areas of Ramat Gan, a Tel Aviv suburb, causing damage to a building.

There were no immediate reports of fatalities but two people were reportedly hurt after inhaling smoke, Israeli rescue services said in statements.

Dozens of rockets were fired at central and southern Israel at midday, activating the anti-rocket Iron Dome system, a military spokesperson told Xinhua.

Air raid sirens sounded in the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area and the southern city of Ashdod. Multiple explosions were heard throughout Tel Aviv, Israel's financial hub, according to eyewitnesses.

The Hebrew-language Ynet news website reported that rockets targeted an area near the Ben Gurion Airport, triggering sirens at the airport.

Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian group that runs the Gaza Strip, said in a statement that the barrages were "a revenge" for the killing of 10 Palestinians, mostly children, in Israeli strikes early on Saturday.

Since Monday, Israel has pounded Gaza with hundreds of air strikes and shells, killing at least 139 people, including 39 children and 22 women. Rockets fired by militant groups in Gaza killed nine people.

The violence was the worst escalation between Israel and the besieged Palestinian enclave since 2014. Enditem
