HONG KONG, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as Thailand reported new daily record of nearly 10,000 infections Monday due to prison clusters, while the daily new cases in India fell below 300,000 for the first time since April 21.

India's federal health ministry reported 281,386 confirmed cases during the past 24 hours, the first time since April 21 that new COVID-19 cases reported on daily basis have fallen below 300,000 mark.

Meanwhile, as many as 4,106 related deaths were reported from across the country on Monday, raising the death toll in the country to 274,390.

The number of total confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country now has risen to 24,965,463, the ministry said.

Thailand hit a new daily record with the discovery of nearly 10,000 new COVID-19 cases after massive infections were found in the prison system, official data showed.

The country reported 9,635 new cases, including 6,853 infected in the prison system, according to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The new infections brought the country's total number of infections to 111,082. The death toll climbed to 614, with 25 new fatalities reported on Monday, according to the CCSA.

Thailand on Monday received a batch of Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines donated by China.

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) reported 5,979 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,149,925.

The death toll climbed to 19,262 after 72 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 4,295 within one day to 1,744,045, with the death toll adding by 212 to 48,305, the health ministry said.

According to the ministry, 5,754 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,606,611.

South Korea reported 619 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 132,290.

The daily caseload was slightly up from 610 in the previous day, staying below 700 for three days. The daily average caseload for the past week was 645.

Three more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 1,903. The total fatality rate stood at 1.44 percent.

Afghanistan's Public Health Ministry reported 221 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total nationwide infections to 63,819, including over 6,000 active cases.

The pandemic has so far claimed 2,751 lives in Afghanistan since February last year, including six deaths in the past 24 hours, the ministry said in a statement.

Up to 323 patients recovered during the cited period. Enditem
