Malaysia reports 4,446 new COVID-19 cases

KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia recorded the highest single-day deaths from COVID-19 on Monday after the outbreak claimed 45 more lives, bringing the death toll to 1,947, according to the health ministry.

Malaysia has suffered a resurgence of COVID-19 cases which has forced the government to impose a nationwide movement control order till June to curb the spread. The previous record for single-day fatalities was reported on Saturday with 44 deaths.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that the victims ranged from 36 to 90 years old, with the majority of them suffering from existing health complications.

Another 4,446 new COVID-19 infections were reported, of which three are imported and 4,443 are local transmissions, bringing the national total to 474,556.

Some 2,784 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total number of cured to 429,103, or 90.4 percent of all cases.

Of the remaining 43,506 active cases, 522 are being held in intensive care units and 273 of those are in need of assisted breathing. Enditem
