Live COVID-19 updates: Thailand sees record daily COVID-19 deaths

BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BANGKOK -- Thailand reported 35 COVID-19 related deaths over the last 24 hours, the highest daily record since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said Tuesday.

The total death toll has risen to 649, with more than 500 recorded during the third wave.

The country also reported 2,473 new COVID-19 cases in the same period, of which 2,450 are domestic cases and 23 imported cases, raising the total tally to 113,555, according to CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, with all of them imported from abroad, bringing the national tally to 235.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, one of the new cases is a 41-year-old man who arrived in the country from Pakistan via Kuala Lumpur. The other two cases were two men from Manila and neither of them has symptoms of infection.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 1,272 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 30 new deaths from the coronavirus epidemic on Tuesday, bringing the total tally to 782,129 with 12,211 deaths.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said that 16,855 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported 134 new COVID-19 cases from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time Tuesday, including 133 locally transmitted and one imported, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 4,512, according to its Ministry of Health.

The community cases were all detected in northern and central localities, including 96 in the northern Bac Giang province, 16 in the northern Bac Ninh province and seven in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, among others.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia on Tuesday reported a record high of single-day deaths from COVID-19 at 47, and that of daily cases at 4,865.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that new variants of the COVID-19 virus were partly blamed for the surge in new cases and daily deaths in the Southeast Asian country.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 4,185 within one day to 1,748,230, with the death toll adding by 172 to 48,477, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, 5,628 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,612,239.

SUVA -- Fiji reported four new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Tuesday night, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 178 in the island nation.

According to the Fijian health ministry, the cases were all close contacts of existing cases from a cluster in Nausori, a town about 19 km northeast of the national capital Suva.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 8,183 new COVID-19 infections over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 4,957,756, the official monitoring and response center said Tuesday.

The national COVID-19 death toll rose by 364 to 116,575 in the past day, while the number of the country's recoveries grew by 8,972 to 4,572,226. Enditem
