3 Nigerian soldiers killed by gunmen in central Nigeria: governor

LAGOS, May 18 (Xinhua) -- A Nigerian state governor said on Tuesday that three soldiers had been killed in a gun battle with armed bandits in Niger state, north-central part of the country.

Abubakar Sani Bello, governor of Niger state, told reporters at a press briefing in Minna, the state capital that a team of army soldiers encountered a group of armed bandits on Monday night in Magama area of the state, and the gun battle led to the death of three soldiers and two bandits.

Bello said other bandits managed to escape, and "were being trailed by the army troops."

The governor said in spite of the banditry activities in the state, normalcy is gradually returning to some of the communities recently with deployment of security forces.

A series of gunmen attacks have recently happened across the most populous African country, leading to the death of civilians and security operatives. Enditem
