TOKYO -- Japan's exports in April climbed 38 percent from a year ago to book the largest increase in more than 10 years, amid continued recovery from the downside effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the government said in a report on Thursday.

According to the Finance Ministry, exports for the month stood at 7.18 trillion yen (65.97 billion U.S. dollars), marking the fastest pace of increase since April 2010. (Japan-Export)

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 5,797 within one day to 1,758,898, with the death toll adding by 218 to 48,887, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

According to the ministry, 4,969 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,621,572. (Indonesia-COVID-19)

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 6,806 new COVID-19 infections in the highest daily spike since the outbreak of the pandemic, bringing the national total to 492,302, the Health Ministry said Thursday.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that two of the new cases are imported and 6,804 are local transmissions.

Another 59 deaths have been reported, the highest in a single day, pushing the total deaths to 2,099. (Malaysia-COVID-19)

VIENTIANE -- The Lao government has decided to extend the current nationwide lockdown to June 4 as COVID-19 cases in the Southeast Asian country continued to surge.

The Lao government will extend the lockdown for 15 days until June 4 as the COVID-19 situation in the country is not yet fully under control, according to a notice issued by the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday. (Laos-COVID-19-Lockdown) Enditem
