DAR ES SALAAM, May 23 (Xinhua) -- A canoe capsized in southern Tanzania's crocodile-infested Ruvuma River lying on the border with Mozambique, police said on Sunday.

Chesco Mbata, the Ruvuma region's head of the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force, told a news conference that the canoe capsized at 6 a.m. local time on Saturday when the victims were crossing the river to their farms.

Mbata, a senior police officer, said the canoe was hit by strong upstream river waves that caused it to lose direction and subsequently capsized in the river.

"The six victims are from two close farming families," Mbata said, adding that a rescue mission is still searching for them. Enditem
