Macao's merchandise export up 71.9 pct in April

MACAO, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Macao's total merchandise export amounted to 1.06 billion patacas (132.6 million U.S. dollars) in April 2021, up 71.9 percent year on year, the special administrative region's (SAR) statistic department said on Monday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the value of re-exports rose by 70.2 percent to 906 million patacas in April, with that of watches, wine and diamond and diamond jewelry surging by 505.7 percent, 377.4 percent and 118.5 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, the value of domestic exports grew by 82.4 percent to 154 million patacas, the DSEC report added.

From January to April this year, the total value of merchandise export increased by 24.8 percent year on year to 4.52 billion patacas. Merchandise trade deficit totaled 38.91 billion patacas for the first four months of 2021, up by 22.48 billion patacas from a year earlier.

Analyzed by destination, merchandise export to the mainland rose by 20.6 percent year on year to 579 million patacas from January to April 2021. Exports to the Hong Kong SAR, the United States and the European Union grew by 31.2 percent, 50.4 percent and 4.7 percent respectively year on year.

Meanwhile, exports of textiles and garments fell by 19.5 percent year on year to 444 million patacas, while exports of non-textiles went up by 32.7 percent to 4.08 billion patacas. (1 pataca equals 0.1251 U.S. dollar) Enditem
