JUBA, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese transitional government's lead negotiator Monday expressed hope of finalizing a peace deal with Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) at the ongoing talks in South Sudan's capital Juba.

Khalid Omer Yousif, minister for cabinet affairs of Sudan's transitional government, expressed optimism of inking a final peace deal with the opposition group led by Abdel Aziz Al-Hilu.

"We have reservations on the proposal of the SPLM-N but we will continue to negotiate for a final peaceful settlement of the conflict," Yousif told journalists in Juba.

In October 2020, the SPLM-N refused to sign the peace deal between the Sudan government and five other armed oppositions in Juba as it demanded a democratic and secular state with freedom of religion.

Kuku Jakdol, SPLM-N spokesperson, said that the government's response to their demands has so far been positive, raising hopes of concluding the peace process.

"We have received the government's response and it is highly positive, that means we will revisit our reservations and in the next few days we will find a lasting solution," said Jakdol.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir last week launched the resumption of the peace talks between the Sudanese transitional government and the SPLM-N under his mediation.

Tut Gatluak, head of South Sudan mediation team in the Sudanese peace talks, revealed that the talks between the parties are progressing well, adding that he expects the two sides to finalize the talks with a peace deal. Enditem
