YANGON, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Chairman of Myanmar's State Administration Council and Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing met with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer on Thursday, state-run media reported on Friday.

Matters on the progress of humanitarian activities being jointly operated by the ICRC and the Myanmar Red Cross Society, ICRC's support extended to Myanmar's efforts to address the COVID-19 and future collaboration between Myanmar and the ICRC were discussed at the meeting, the report said.

According to the ICRC's press release, Peter Maurer said "caught between armed conflict, COVID-19 and the current situation, people in Myanmar are in need of urgent assistance and protection."

"The visit aimed to share ICRC's concerns on the current humanitarian situation and reinforce ongoing efforts to ensure space for neutral and impartial humanitarian action," the release said.

It said that the president reiterated ICRC's commitment to reinforcing its support to the Myanmar Red Cross Society's humanitarian work, especially in the area of first aid, ambulance services, emergency response and COVID-19 prevention. Enditem
