LONDON, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Chelsea has rewarded coach Thomas Tuchel for leading them to success in this season's Champions League with a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of June 2024.

The club announced the decision just six days after Chelsea beat Manchester 1-0 in this season's final thanks to Kai Havartz's 42nd minute goal to give them the second Champions League title.

It also comes just over five months after he was sacked by Paris Saint Germain on December 24th last year. The German then signed an 18-month contract with Chelsea on January 26 following the sacking of Frank Lampard.

"I cannot imagine a better occasion for a contract renewal. I am grateful for the experience and very happy to stay part of the Chelsea family. There is far more to come and we are looking forward to our next steps with ambition and much anticipation," said Tuchel on the official Chelsea website.

The German coach won 19 of his 30 games in charge with his side conceding just 16 goals - five of which came in a surprise defeat to West Brom and also led Chelsea to the FA Cup final, where they lost 1-0 to Leicester City as well as securing third place in the Premier League.

"When Thomas joined us in January there was still so much to play for domestically and in Europe. He slotted in seamlessly and immediately became an integral part of the Chelsea family," said Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia.

"Returning us to the top four in the Premier League was crucial, and we could not be happier with our success in the Champions League which crowned a remarkable season at Chelsea."

"We are obviously extremely pleased therefore to retain Thomas for a further two years, and look forward to more achievements in the coming seasons," said Granovskaia. Enditem
