Kenya to leverage on motor sports to boost tourism sector: official

NAIROBI, June 6 (Xinhua) -- An official with Kenya's tourism marketing body said Sunday that the government plans to leverage on the global appeal of motor sports in order to boost local tourism sector.

Allan Njoroge, acting CEO of Kenya Tourism Board, said the sector is re-positioning itself to reap from the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally Kenya set for June 24-27 in the scenic town of Naivasha, in Nakuru County.

Njoroge said in a statement issued in Nairobi that the 2021 WRC event which had been postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic came at a significant time when Kenya is looking forward to fully opening up for tourism and offered an opportunity for the world to see some of the country's best attractions.

He added that the event that was born as the East African Coronation Rally in 1953 will be televised to a large audience across the globe.

Njoroge revealed that over 850 million viewers are expected to follow the event in its 14 rounds with a total of 13,452 broadcast hours projected through the event.

The official said that the connection of the event with Kenya's fame as an authentic safari destination will be reinforced with live media coverage of the rally cars traversing through wild, scenic and beautiful locations across the country. Enditem
