ISLAMABAD -- At least 18 people were missing after a passenger van careened off a road and plunged into a river in Pakistan's Upper Kohistan district of northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday, a rescue official said.

A search and rescue operation for the missing passengers is underway, Muhamad Hamza, an emergency official of emergency rescue service Rescue 1122 in Upper Kohistan, told Xinhua. (Pakistan-Passenger van accident)

MANILA -- The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported on Monday 6,539 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,276,004.

The death toll climbed to 21,969 after 71 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

ISLAMABAD -- A collision between two passenger trains left at least 36 people dead and over 70 others injured on early Monday morning in Ghotki district of Pakistan's southern Sindh province, officials told Xinhua.

Spokesperson of the Pakistan Railways Nazia Jabeen told Xinhua that the collision took place between Millat Express and Sir Syed Express between Raiti and Ubauro areas of the district. (Pakistan-Train collision)

VIENTIANE -- The GX Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization based in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), has provided medical supplies to support Laos' response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The supplies, including personal protective equipment for medical staff, ventilators and patient monitors, were handed over to Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Taskforce for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, by visiting Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and President of the GX Foundation Leung Chun-ying. ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan confirmed 1,490 new positive COVID-19 cases on Sunday with a 3.02-percent positivity rate, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said on Monday.

The NCOC said in a statement that the country's number of overall cases rose to 933,630, which include 864,931 recoveries since February of last year when the first case of its kind was reported in Pakistan.
