TALUQAN, Afghanistan, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Four security forces members and 12 Taliban militants were killed in separate incidents in Afghanistan's northern Takhar province on Wednesday night, the military said on Thursday.

In Ishkamish district, four security forces members were killed and two people, including Sayyed Muqtadar, district chief of Ishkamish, were wounded when security forces repelled a Taliban militants' attack on center of the district, army's 217th Pamir Corps said in a statement.

Several militants were also killed and wounded during the fighting which lasted for hours in the remote district, the statement said.

Besides, at least 12 Taliban militants including two Taliban's prominent divisional commanders Noorullah and Bashir were killed and six others wounded in Afghan Air Force strikes conducted in Chah Ab district of Takhar, according to the source.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes in recent months.

The violence lingers in war-torn Afghanistan as the U.S. and NATO troops have been leaving the country.

About 3,500 U.S. forces and 7,000 NATO troops will withdraw from Afghanistan before Sept. 11, the day marking the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that drew the United States into war in the country. Enditem
