NAIROBI, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Thursday launched United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) commemorative stamps in order to boost the preservation of its indigenous languages.

Dan Kagwe, CEO and postmaster general at state-owned Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) told journalists in Nairobi that Kenya is a multilingual country with over 60 different indigenous languages. "The stamp we are unveiling will serve to inform, educate and raise awareness on these indigenous languages hence promoting a culture of peace, understanding and tolerance," Kagwe said.

He observed that the stamps will be a means of expressing the country's culture and history and will also act as ambassadors for national heritage and an educational tool.

He added that the UNESCO Secretariat has requested the Universal Postal Union member countries such as Kenya to produce a commemorative stamp to celebrate indigenous languages globally. Enditem
