COPENHAGEN, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is reported to be in a stable condition after collapsing on the pitch in the 42nd minute of his side's opening European Championship match against Finland on Saturday afternoon.

Eriksen fell directly to the ground three minutes from halftime as he ran to receive a throw-in and the Finnish players immediately signaled for referee Anthony Taylor to call medical staff onto the pitch.

As the visibly upset Danish players formed a shield around the 29-year-old midfielder, TV images showed a member of the team's medical staff appearing to perform compression treatment (CPR) on the 29-year-old's chest.

Eriksen was taken from the pitch after receiving treatment for around 10 minutes, with his team-mates holding sheets around the stretcher, while Simon Kjaer and Kasper Schmeichel were shown comforting his partner, Sabrina Kvist Jensen, who has run onto the pitch.

A photo published online soon afterwards showed that Eriksen had regained consciousness before leaving the ground and appeared to be receiving oxygen as he was taken to hospital.

UEFA confirmed that Eriksen had been taken to hospital "and been stabilized," while the Danish FA also informed that he was "awake and will undergo further tests" in the hospital.

Eriksen's agent Martin Schoots also had positive news, telling NPO radio that "Christian Eriksen breathes and can speak. He's awake."

After the incident there was an emergency meeting between both teams and the referee and it was agreed the game should restart at 20:30 central European time "following the request of both teams." Enditem
