More areas classified as hotspots in Zimbabwe amid COVID-19 cases surge

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe on Tuesday classified additional areas as COVID-19 hotspots following a surge in new virus cases.
Masvingo and Chiredzi in Masvingo Province, Nkulumane, Emakhandeni and all the northern suburbs in the second largest city Bulawayo were classified as COVID-19 hotspots, according to a statement from the health ministry.
The development comes just days after the government announced a two-week localized lockdown for Karoi and Kariba towns in Mashonaland West Province.
Stricter public health measures also came into effect in the city of Kwekwe in the Midlands province last month after the detection of the highly transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19 first detected in India.
Zimbabwe has witnessed a surge in COVID -19 cases over the past week, leading health authorities to impose additional restrictions to curb a possible third wave of the virus.
Some of the measures imposed include banning all public gatherings and sporting activities, limiting funeral gatherings to 30 people as well as reducing business operating hours.
As of Monday, Zimbabwe had recorded 40,077 positive cases of COVID-19, 37,027 recoveries and 1,635 deaths. Enditem
