KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia reported another 5,150 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday, bringing the national total to 673,026.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that three of the new cases are imported and 5,147 are local transmissions.

The official said that while the current lockdown had reduced cases, the number of severe cases requiring intensive care and assisted breathing remains high, due to the spread of more contagious variants that lead to more severe symptoms in a shorter period of time and also take longer time for patients to recover.

In response, the capacity to care for patients is being increased through cooperation with more hospitals and normal wards being repurposed to serve as intensive care units among other measures, he said.

Another 73 more deaths have been reported on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 4,142.

Some 7,240 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 600,935 or 89.3 percent of all cases.

Of the remaining 67,949 active cases, 924 are being held in intensive care and 453 of those are in need of assisted breathing. Enditem
