VIENTIANE, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Ministry of Health has urged authorities and people countrywide to remain cautious, as the new Delta coronavirus variant is spreading in other countries.

The Lao government has instructed authorities across the country to strictly monitor the border and record information about people entering Laos, in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19, according to a report by the health ministry on Wednesday.

The Health ministry is concerned about people entering Laos illegally across the Mekong River. Provinces that border Thailand are considered at high risk for the spread of the virus, especially as the border is porous.

The temperature of people entering Laos must be checked before being sent to quarantine center for 14 days.

The National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control said it has been monitoring 4,141 people across the country over COVID-19 concerns.

As of Wednesday, the total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in Laos is 2,076 and 1,960 patients have recovered.

Laos reported its first two COVID-19 cases on March 24 last year. Enditem
