Lao capital to vaccinate 80 percent of residents against COVID-19 this year

VIENTIANE, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Ministry of Health has planned to inoculate 80 percent of population in the Lao capital Vientiane against COVID-19 by the end of this year in order to create herd immunity and break the chain of the coronavirus infection.

Nationwide, the ministry aims to vaccinate 50 percent of the country's total population during the same period.

Over 260,000 people in Vientiane have so far received a first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a Lao News Agency report on Thursday.

So far, in Vientiane the Sinopharm, Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines have been approved for use.

Laos has so far reported 2,080 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as well as 1,962 recoveries from the pandemic.

The Southeast Asian country reported its first two COVID-19 cases on March 24 last year. Enditem
