PHNOM PENH, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported 36 new COVID-19 fatalities on Saturday, the highest-ever daily number of deaths, taking the overall death toll in the country to 696, the health ministry said in a statement.

The figure topped the previous highest daily record of 32 deaths on Friday, the ministry said.

The Southeast Asian nation also logged 948 new cases, pushing the national caseload to 53,298 so far, it said, adding that 615 patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 46,123.

Health ministry's secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine called on the people to be more cautious as the kingdom has detected several cases of the Delta variant among laborers returning from neighboring Thailand.

"Please act responsively together to suppress COVID-19 transmission if we do not want to cross 'red line'. We hope everyone can do this together," she said in a tweet.

Cambodia launched a vaccination drive on Feb. 10, starting from capital Phnom Penh and Kandal province before expanding it to other provinces recently. China is the key vaccine supplier to the kingdom.

As of July 2, some 7.55 million vaccines had been administered, with 4.39 million people receiving their first dose and 3.16 million having completed the two-dose inoculation, Vandine said.

The country has planned to inoculate at least 10 million out of its 16 million population by November in order to create herd immunity. Enditem
