YAOUNDE, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon on Wednesday began a sensitization campaign to make a success of vaccination targeting millions of its citizens in its biggest push yet against COVID-19 pandemic.

For four days, more than 500 vaccination teams will carry out sensitization and vaccination door to door and in public places including churches and markets, authorities said.

The Central African nation launched the immunization campaign in April after receiving its first batch of vaccines donated by China. The first phase targeted some 800,000 persons but only about 100,000 persons have taken the jab since then, said Minister of Public Health Malachie Manaouda.

"It is absolutely necessary that the majority of the population is vaccinated so that we can restart activities especially economic activities," Manaouda told reporters at the start of Wednesday's campaign, stressing that all persons aged 18 and above are eligible to take the vaccine.

Cameroon expects to vaccinate 20 percent of its about 25 million population before the Africa Cup of Nations football competition which the country will host in January next year, according to officials.

The country has ordered more than 5 million vaccine doses for the vaccination, according to Manaouda. Enditem
